Sania Mirza, Playing brilliant attacking tennis, downed Israel's Shahar Peer 6-7 (7/9), 7-5, 6-3 in the third round of the Pacific Open late on Sunday night at Indian Wells, USA.
Peer started strongly, pushing Sania on the defensive. She was particularly punishing off her backhand. Trailing 2-5, Sania picked up her act, egged on by her father and family in the stands, she started going for her shots, saving a couple of set points before pushing the set to tie-breaker. The Indian ace saved another set point in the tie-breaker, but came up short on her own chance to close it out. At 7-all, the Israeli got a lucky net cord and she won the set soon after.
Sania was in control of the second set although Peer didn't let her guard down. Bouyed by her success, the Indian continued to pound her forehands and backhands to mount pressure on Peer. She went up 5-1 in the third, but Peer refused to relent. The Indian then closed out in the ninth game. This is her third successive win over her friend and former doubles partner.
Sania's task only gets tougher from here as she faces world No. 8 and fifth seed Slovak Daniela Hantuchova, who beat Chinese Jie Zhang 6-4, 6-2 in a third round match.
