In the soviet famine of 1932-1933 millions of people starved to death. The holodomor is a major part of that famine that occurred in Ukraine in that period of time. Estimated death toll in this famine is nearly 10 million which includes a massive peasant population of about 8 million. It was the terrible national catastrophe that affected Ukraine to a great extent.
At that time the major agricultural lands were so much affected that it could not be expressed in words. The food requisition actions carried by the authorities of Soviet resulted in the famine. Some consider the famine was a pre-planned attack on Ukraine. Later it was found that the famine was due to some in ineffective economic policies followed by the communist govenrnments in the Soviet Union. The term 'golodomor' refers to 'great hunger'.
To attract the attention of the world to Ukraine, the term 'golodomor' was transformed into 'holodomor' which sounds similar to 'holocaust'. So this should be taken as a genocide or genocidal famine. But the European Parliament refused to accept the fact that it is an act of genocide instead it treated it as a crime planned by the politicians so as to force through the collectivization policy of the Union. I feel very grateful to get such a information about the Holodomor.
