
Swiss star Roger Federer shook off the challenge of Chile's Fernando Gonzalez to reach the quarter-finals of the Indian Wells hardcourt tennis tournament on Wednesday.
The world number two, seeded second here behind world No.1 Rafael Nadal, got past Gonzalez 6-3, 5-7, 6-2.
In the quarter-finals he'll face 10th-seeded Spaniard Fernando Verdasco, a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 winner over unseeded German Philipp Kohlschreiber.
Fourth-seeded Briton Andy Murray reached the quarter-finals as fourth-round opponent Tommy Robredo of Spain retired with a right wrist injury. Murray led 6-2, 3-0 when Robredo decided he couldn't continue.
Murray next faces either Igor Andreev of Russia or Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia.
Fourth-seeded Russian Vera Zvonareva booked a semi-final berth with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over ninth-seeded Dane Caroline Wozniacki.
