Monday, March 31, 2008

Fernando Torres put Liverpool to claim fourth spot in the Premiership and a place in next season's Champions League by scoring the only goal in the 207th Merseyside derby against Everton to seal a 1-0 win at Anfield on Sunday.
Liverpool, who face Arsenal in the first-leg of their Champions League quarter-final at the Emirates on Wednesday, looked in danger of conceding the points before Torres had put Rafa Benitez's team ahead on seven minutes.

Yet despite of great effort for the equaliser, Everton could not find the breakthrough and Liverpool held on for a victory that puts them well-clear in the race for fourth spot.

Valencia enter final

Saturday, March 22, 2008

Valencia stunned Barcelona 3-2 at the Mestalla to reach the King's Cup final 4-3 on aggregate on Thursday. Barca, who had scrambled an injury-time equaliser to draw 1-1 in the first leg, were hit by a Ruben Baraja piledriver and a breakaway goal from Juan Mata before halftime in an intense encounter they dominated throughout.
Substitute Thierry Henry pulled one back for Barca in the second half only for Mata to bag his second almost immediately and, although a late Samuel Eto'o goal set up a grandstand finish, it was to no avail.

The victory relieves some of the pressure on coach Ronald Koeman who has seen Valencia drop out of Europe and the league title race since he replaced Quique Sanchez Flores in November.

Valencia will meet Getafe on April 16, with a place in next season's UEFA Cup up for grabs, after Michael Laudrup's side booked a second consecutive appearance in the final with a 4-2 aggregate victory over Racing Santander on Wednesday. The game followed the pattern of the first leg at the Nou Camp with Valencia successfully packing the midfield and looking to hit the visitors on the break.

Man U have goals in mind

Wednesday, March 19, 2008

Manchester United want to get back on the goal trail when they face Bolton

Ferguson, though, is concerned that his free-scoring side appears to have lost
confidence in front of goal. Cristiano Ronaldo's invaluable winner at Pride Park was only United's second goal in three outings.

No benefits from growth hormone

Wednesday, March 19, 2008

People who take human growth hormone in the hope of boosting athletic performance are not only breaking the law and risking their health, but likely are not even achieving their objective, Us researchers reported on Monday. While some reports show that some illegal steroids may help athletes bulk up and train harder, human growth hormone is not one of them, the report in the Annals of Internal Medicine suggests.

Dr. Hau Liu of Stanford University in California and his team looked at 27 studies covering 303 people aged 13 to 45. They found that, overall, those who took growth hormone did develop more lean body mass, but this did not translate to either more strength or exercise capacity. Those who took growth hormone had swelling of their tissues and more fatigue compared to people not taking the drug, they added.

Unwell Fisichella To Start 16th In Season Opener

Sunday, March 16, 2008

The dice has rolled. The start order for the opening race of 2008 Formula 1 season has been decided. Who will win the opening race will be determined in a few hours' time.
Lewis Hamilton who appeared as a breath of freshness on the motorsports firmament a year back seemed to be starting off from where he left off the last season. He did miss out the championship in his rookie year by a solitary point, but wiht a little bit of luck he would have re-written the history book.

For the ING Australian GP the 23-year British driver pulled out his best towards the end of the third qualifying segment to pip Robert Kubica of BMW Petronas by one tenth of a second to slot himself ahead of the German on the front row of the grid. For Force India it was a case of so near; yet so far. Right through the practice sessions Giancarlo Fisichella, despite running a temperature for the last two days, impressed one and all. In the Saturday morning session, he once again retained his Friday's ninth position.

But in the post-lunch qualifying session, the Force India's tale queered a bit after Adrain Sutil spun and stalled his car on the flying in the first qualifying segment. Fishi who came charging out of the first two sectors had yellow waved at his face.

He has a one shot lead on Tom Lehman, Vijay Singh, Lee Westwood and Lucas Glover. Couples won at Bay Hill in 1992, shooting a 63 in one of his rounds. Back problems restricted Couples to three tournaments last year; and he is playing this year on an exempt status reserved for the top 25 all-time money winners.

Henry made his move around the turn, picking up four birdies in an eight-hole stretch.

Spain's Barcelona, Italy's Roma, Schalke of Germany and Turkey's Fenerbahce will contest European soccer's elite club competition with the English Premier League's to four. Since the maximum number of teams from one country rose to four in the 1999-2000 Champions League , no nation had previously seen all its representatives reach the last eight. Reds made Champions League of Their Own

Wednesday, March 12, 2008

Liverpool eased into the Champions League quarter-finals after a superb strike by Fernando Torres gave last season's runnersup a 1-0 win at Inter Milan on Tuesday and a 3-0 aggregate victory.
Inter, who had centre back Marco Materazzin harshly dismissed in the first leg, also went down to 10 men in the return match when defender Nicolas Burdisso was sent off for a second booking after a clumsy 50th-minute tackle on Lucas Leiva.

Torres scored his fourth goal of the Champions League campaign 13 minutes later with a turn-and-shoton the edge of the area following a pass from Fabio Aurelio.
The Serie A leaders had several chances at a cacophonous San Siro but Argentine Julio Cruz and Strike partner Zlatan Ibrahimovic were wasteful. An early long-range effort from Cruz was well saved by Pepe Reina before the Argentine shot wide.

Swede Ibrahimovic also blasted over two free kicks and missed an excellent opportunity after an error by centre back Martin Skrtel.
Liverpool were not content to sit back. Esteban Cambiasso, one of several players to lose their footing, slipped in the area and left in Torres but the in-form Spaniard shot at the keeper. He made no mistake midway through the second half though, sending Liverpool fans wild with delight.

Barca dream in tatters Loss to Villarreal Widens Gap with Real

Tuesday, March 11, 2008

Barcelona's title hopes are hanging by a thread with Frank Rijkaard's team eight points behind Real Madrid after a late goal from Jon-Dahl Tomasson helped Villarreal to a 2-1 win at Camp Nou on Sunday. With 11 games left Barca need a minor miracle to overhaul Real, 2-1 conquerors of Espanyol on Saturday, and prevent their arch-rivals from retaining the Spanish championship.
Xavi Hernandez looked to have snatched a point for Barca after he cancelled out Marcos Senna's first half penalty but Danish substitute Tomasson struck the winner nine minutes from time.

It was a famous win for Villarreal who have completed a league double over the Catalans and are now only four points behind in third. Two weeks ago Barcelona were just two points behind Real but successive defeats to Atletico Madrid and Villarreal could have ended their title hopes.
Barca were without Lionel Messi, sidelined for six weeks with a leg injury, but their attacking trident of Thierry Henry, Ronaldinho and Samuel Eto'o still made fearsome reading for the Villarreal back four. With Carles Puyol missing, Ronaldinho took over the captain's armband. The home side dominated possession but Victo Valdes hauled down Guille Franco in the box and Senna braved the home whistling to convert the spot-kick.

Xavi equalised on 67 minutes but substitute Tomasson produced a shock winner a Villarreal won at Camp Nou for the first time in six years.

Ronaldo Furious with the standard of Refereeing

Monday, March 10, 2008

Cristiano Ronaldo claimed that poor refereeing standards in English football have left him 'scared' to play his natural game after a controversial performance by refereee Martin Atkinson contributed to Manchester United's shock 1-0 FA Cup exit at the hands of Portsmouth.
Ronaldo said: "The referee against Portsmouth was unbelievable. In the first five minutes, there were three fouls and he took no action and then he failed to give a penalty. It's difficult to play like this. Sometimes they just protect the defenders and I am thinking about having to change my game because it is difficult to play like that."

Atkinson, one of the more inexperienced officials on the Premier League list, was also singled out for criticism bye Ferguson, but the Unitedboss reserved his strongest tirade for referees' supremo Keith Hackett, the man charged with appointing officialsto games.

Henry to miss Olympics

Fri, 29 Feb 2008

Triple Olympic champion Jodie Henry is to miss August's Beijing Games after failing to overcome a pelvic injury, the swimmer said.

Henry, who won the women's 100 metres freestyle in Athens four years ago and was a member of Australia's victorious 4x100m freestyle and 4x100m medley relay squads, said she would miss next month's selection trials, ruling her out of competing at Beijing.
The Australian trials in Sydney from Mar. 22-29 are compulsory for swimmers hoping to compete in Beijing.
"It has been a very hard decision to make as the Olympics is every swimmer's goal and I would have loved to be able to go to Beijing and try to defend my title and help the girls win another relay," Henry said.
"I have been struggling with an injury which has meant that I haven't been able to train as much as I would have liked, and as much as I have needed to, to be ready for the Olympic trials.
"Whilst missing the Olympic team is a huge disappointment for me, I am pleased because now that my injury has been finally diagnosed I can start on the road to recovery."
The former world 100m freestyle record holder has been suffering from an injury to muscles around her pelvis, which has restricted the amount of training she can do.

Sir Rembrandt retired

Sun, 02 Mar 2008

Sir Rembrandt, the 2004 Cheltenham Gold Cup runner-up, has been retired.

Connections of the popular 12-year-old chose to call it a day after a third consecutive poor show at Newbury on Saturday.
Victor Dartnall's chaser was off the bridle some way from home in the National Britannia Veterans' Handicap Chase and trailed home a distant seventh.
Dartnall told the Racing Post: "He didn't really enjoy himself and is not the same horse we saw earlier in the season.
"The owner is very keen to retire him now and I fully support him."
Sir Rembrandt made a winning debut for Dartnall at Cheltenham in November, having previously been under the tutelage of Robert Alner.
The Alan Hordle-owned stayer accrued prize-money of nearly £318,000 and won six races, two of which at Graded level.

South Africa sweep Bangladesh aside

Mon, 03 Mar 10:26:00 2008

South Africa spinner Robin Peterson took five wickets to lead his team to a crushing victory by an innings and 205 runs in the second Test against Bangladesh.

South Africa dismissed the hosts for 119 on the fourth day to complete a 2-0 series win.
South Africa captain Graeme Smith and fast bowler Dale Steyn (pictured) were named man-of-the-match and man-of-the-series respectively.
Bangladesh, replying to South Africa's 583 for seven declared, were dismissed for 259 and were reeling at 54 for five after being asked to follow on just after tea on Sunday.
On resumption, the hosts lost their remaining wickets adding just 65 runs in 14.2 overs, with Peterson adding three more scalps to finish with five for 33 and Morne Morkel claiming the other wicket.
Bangladesh batsman Aftab Ahmed, who retired hurt on 21 after being hit on the cheek by a delivery from Jacques Kallis on Sunday, did not bat and was adjudged out.
Tail-ender Abdur Razzak finished on 33 not out.
Smith was delighted with the way his team had adapted to slow conditions on the sub-continent and looked forward to the three-test test tour of India starting later this month.
South Africa also won their test series in Pakistan 1-0 late last year.
"In Pakistan we have adapted, we adapted in Bangladesh and now we are going to India," he said. "So hopefully we can do well in India."
Smith felt his team would be boosted when left-arm spinner Paul Harris makes his return from injury for the India trip.
"With Harry coming back from injury and Peterson doing well here, I think we have slotted for a second spinner's spot now."
Bangladesh captain Mohammad Ashraful blamed his batsmen's failure to negotiate South Africa's pace attack.
"We are not accustomed to playing such bouncers and pace," he said. "We are practising to face such bowling."
South Africa took a firm grip from the start after Smith (232) and Neil McKenzie (226) shared a world record test opening stand of 415 in their innings.
South African fast bowler Makhaya Ntini then took four first innings wickets to become his country's second highest test wicket-taker, tallying 334 victims after moving past former paceman Allan Donald's haul of 330.
Only Shahriar Nafees, who top-scored with 69 in the first innings, passed 50 for Bangladesh as the lowest-ranked test team failed to provide any resistance against their formidable rivals.
Left-arm spinner Mohammad Rafique, the home team's most successful bowler, provided some consolation by completing 100 test wickets in his final test.
Smith praised Steyn, who claimed 14 wickets in the two tests.
"I thought we bowled very well," he said. "I am very happy particularly about Dale, he has got a real killer instinct and that's going to be one of his greatest strengths."

Champions League - Behind Enemy Lines

Mon, 03 Mar 10:26:00 2008
Our weekly look at the domestic fortunes of British clubs' upcoming adversaries in the Champions League, with just Manchester United's next opponents Lyon managing a win over the weekend.
Lyon (away at Manchester United on Tuesday March 4)
Lille 0-1 Lyon
Brazilian striker Fred netted his third goal in two games as Lyon ran out 1-0 winners over Lille at the Stade de France. A Ligue was played in Paris to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the stadium where France won the 1998 World Cup. The result leaves Les Gones three points clear at the top of the table ahead of their trip to Manchester.
Milan (home to Arsenal on Tuesday March 4)
Milan 1-1 Lazio
Milan's stuttering domestic form at the San Siro continued as Carlo Ancelotti's side were held by Lazio to leave them in fifth place, four points off the final Champions League spot. Rossoneri defender Massimo Oddo netted a second half penalty to cancel out Rolando Bianchi's opener and earn Milan a tenth draw of the season so far.
Barcelona (home to Celtic on Tuesday March 4)
Atletico Madrid 4-2 Barcelona
Barcelona slipped behind in the title race in Spain with a demoralising defeat away at Atletico. Ronaldinho put Barca in the lead with a super overhead kick, only for Atleti to rally, Sergio Aguero (twice), Maxi Rodriguez and Diego Forlan putting the hosts 4-1 up before Samuel Eto'o scored a late consolation. It was Barca's first league defeat in nine matches, leaving Frank Rijkaard's side five points behind Real Madrid at the top of La Liga.
Olympiacos (away at Chelsea on Wednesday March 5)
Olympiacos 1-1 Asteras Tripolis
The Athens-based side took a second minute lead through Brazilian Julio Cesar, but Horacio Cardozo's equaliser just after the half hour mark was enough to win the visitors a point. But with league leaders Panainaikos also only managing a draw, second-placed Olympiacos stay well in title contention, just a point behind their rivals.
Internazionale (home to Liverpool on Tuesday March 11)
Napoli 1-0 Inter
Serie A champions Inter crashed to their first league defeat of the season so far after coach Roberto Mancini sent out an inexperienced side at the Stadio San Paolo in Naples. Marcelo Zalayeta netted for the hosts to settle a thrilling encounter, while Julio Cesar saved a penalty to keep Inter in the game until the final whistle. Inter remain top of Serie A, although the defeat saw their lead cut to six points.

Champions League - Seedorf may miss Gunners clash

Sun, 02 Mar 12:43:00 2008
Milan's Dutch midfielder Clarence Seedorf is a doubt for Tuesday's Champions League clash at home to Arsenal after suffering a leg muscle strain in the 1-1 draw with Lazio.
"We'll see over the next few days, but I think it will be difficult to have him back for Tuesday," Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti told Sky television.
Seedorf pulled up after 34 minutes at the San Siro.
Ancelotti said the European champions were suffering fatigue after their fourth league draw in five games.
"We're tired but so are all the other teams, even in Europe," he said. "I don't see teams producing spectacular soccer".
Milan host Arsenal after the first leg of the last 16 tie ended goalless at The Emirates.

Premier League - Team of the Week

Mon, 25 Feb 16:48:00 2008

We sort the wheat from the chaff after the latest round of Premier League action, and it's no surprise to see the reigning champions well-represented in our Team of the Week after their 5-1 humbling of Kevin Keegan's hapless Newcastle.
HOW IT WORKS
We tot up the marks out of 10 awarded in five national newspapers - The Sun, The Mirror, The Mail, The Times and The Guardian - to create a total out of 50. The top player in each position will be rewarded with a spot in the team of the week, while the worst scorers will be named and shamed in our Flops XI.
TEAM OF THE WEEK
Wayne Rooney (pictured) is our player of the week after his well-taken brace helped Man United to a thumping 5-1 win at Newcastle. He was ably abetted by both Cristiano Ronaldo and Michael Carrick , whose performances of late may well have caught the eye of a certain Signor Capello. Elsewhere, Liverpool's hat-trick hero Fernando Torres is rewarded for single-handedly downing Middlesbrough, and Blackburn's David Dunn earns due recognition for his triple assist-making performance against Bolton.

Premier League - Liverpool cruise past Bolton

Mon, 03 Mar 08:49:00 2008

Liverpool recorded a comfortable 3-1 win over Bolton Wanderers at the Reebok Stadium to maintain the challenge on city rivals Everton for a top-four place.

The victory moved Liverpool into the final Champions League spot for a few hours before the Toffees jumped back above them by beating Portsmouth at Goodison Park.
Steven Gerrard (pictured) put the Reds ahead in Lancashire with a shot that embarrassed Bolton 'keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen in a competitive first half packed with chances at both ends.
Liverpool asserted their authority after the break though, and a Ryan Babel strike followed by a fine volley from Fabio Aurelio put the game to bed. Tamir Cohen's header reduced the arrears, but was no more than a consolation.
The result keeps Liverpool firmly in the hunt for the fourth Champions League place, while Bolton remain in 17th.
Bolton had not lost to Liverpool at the Reebok for over five years, and it was they who created the better chances in the opening 10 minutes.
The first of these was an inswinging El-Hadji Diouf free-kick which came back off the crossbar after just five minutes.
The home fans were out of their seats again as a Joey O'Brien header at the back post flashed across the face of goal, though the ball evaded the other white shirts in the area, allowing Liverpool to hack clear.
Bolton's impressive start was totally undone on 11 minutes though when Gerrard's speculative strike from the edge of the area bounced awkwardly in front of Jaaskelainen, hitting the Finn on the head and spinning across the line.
Babel's pace became an increasing factor as the half wore on, and Jaaskelainen somewhat made amends for his earlier gaffe with a fine stop from the Dutchman after he had turned Gretar Steinsson inside out.
Bolton remained a threat, though, and went close to equalising when Kevin Davies ghosted in behind Martin Skrtel to meet Kevin Nolan's cross, forcing Pepe Reina into an excellent low save with a downward header.
While the pace of Liverpool's attack kept the Bolton defence stretched, the home fans continued to create chances, with Gary Cahill heading wide from an inviting position at the near post on the half-hour mark.
If the Bolton fans were by this point feeling a little aggrieved not to be at least on level terms, then they would soon be relieved not to have fallen further behind.
Babel twice more burst through the defence, only to see his efforts stopped by a last-ditch challenge from Cahill and another fine stop from Jaaskelainen.
Bolton replaced the injured Nolan with Cohen at half-time, though never again regained the urgency and verve they had displayed in the first half as Liverpool went on to impose their authority on the game.
A quick Liverpool break on 60 minutes saw Dirk Kuyt lash a low shot onto the post, and when Gary Cahill failed to clear completely, Babel was on hand to slam home past Jaaskelainen.
Andy O'Brien survived a penalty appeal after Gerrard's shot struck his hand following fine work from Babel and Aurelio on the left flank, though the game was over as a contest when a Gerrard corner was cleared only as far as Aurelio on the edge of the area.
The Brazilian chested the ball down, and unleashed a swerving left-foot volley that left the 'keeper with no chance.
The home fans were given a brief cheer when Cohen reduced Bolton's arrears from Matthew Taylor's corner. However the goal was not to be the start of a late fightback as Liverpool comfortably saw out the remaining minutes.

Brown claims Johnnie Walker win

Mon, 03 March, 2008

New Zealand's Mark Brown clinched a three-shot victory in the Johnnie Walker Classic in India, claiming his second title in successive weeks.

The Wellington player capped a sensational run of success with a final round five-under par 67, a week after he had won his maiden international title by claiming the Asian Tour's SAIL Open, also in India.
The 33-year-old, tied second overnight a shot behind Japanese leader Taichiro Kiyota, charged through the back nine with five birdies, four of them in a row.
He took the lead on the 15th hole before sealing victory with a birdie on the 18th, lifting both arms in celebration.
Brown's triumph aggregating 18-under par 270 fetched him a winner's purse of $409,743 and the European Tour playing exemption.
"It is incredible," he said. "It is amazing to have my name there (with other winners). "I've worked extremely hard for this, it is a dream come true."
Overnight leader Kiyota, paired with Brown, led on his own and then was tied at the top with Australia's Scott Strange but both crumbled under pressure to finish tied second with Greg Chalmers of Australia.
Kiyota carded 71 while Strange (68) and Chalmers (68) could also not produce the finish, the trio aggregating 15-under par 273 at the par-72 DLF Golf and Country Club near New Delhi.
Strange's hopes evaporated after a bogey six on the final 18th hole where he hit the fairway bunker and then overshot the green and rolled past the cart path.
Britain's Graeme Storm, Swede Johan Edfors and India's Shiv Kapur were joint fifth a further shot adrift.
Brown's victory was as unexpected as that of last year's winner Anton Haig of South Africa in the event co-sanctioned by the Europe, Asia and Australasia tours.
Paired with Kiyota on the final day, Brown had an uneventful front nine where his two birdies were wiped out by two bogeys.
However, he was simply unstoppable on the return trip despite Kiyota's game crumbling in front of him, particularly his putting.
Strange's final hole misses and Kiyota's bogey five on the 17th all but secured Brown the title.
He still had a heart-stopping moment when his second shot on the 18th hole bounced on the edge of the water hazard and rolled kindly to about 15 feet off the pin. He gladly two-putted to take victory.
Fiji's three-times Major winner Vijay Singh could muster only a par round to finish tied 17th, aggregating nine under while Australian world number five Adam Scott, the favourite, shot 71 to finish tied 30th at seven-under par 281.

Ochoa romps to title

Sun, 02 March, 2008

World number one Lorena Ochoa cruised to an 11-stroke win at the $2 million HSBC Women's Champions tournament in Singapore on her season debut.

Sweden's Annika Sorenstam finished second on nine under with American Paula Creamer in third place two shots further back.
On a day when monsoon-like storms sent spectators sprinting for cover and left others cowering under umbrellas, the Mexican produced a solid 68 for a combined 20 under par at the Tanah Merah Country Club.
Play was suspended several times due to the torrential downpours that submerged greens, left puddles on the fairways and had players kicking their heels in the clubhouse.
The final group took eight hours to complete their round.
The 26-year-old Ochoa, the only player to shoot four rounds under 70, takes home a cheque for $300,000 for the win.
"I came here prepared to win and I did it," Ochoa said.
"I practised really hard in the offseason and I knew I could do it. I have faith in my game and hopefully this will be a great year.
"I'll be back next year to defend my title."
Leading final scores:
268 Lorena Ochoa (Mexico) 66 65 69 68
279 Annika Sorenstam (Sweden) 71 67 70 71
281 Paula Creamer (U.S.) 67 71 70 73
282 Laura Diaz (U.S.) 70 71 70 71
283 Stacy Prammanasudh (U.S.) 70 69 73 71; Karrie Webb (Australia) 69 70 70 74
284 Shin Ji-yai (South Korea) 73 69 70 72
285 Christina Kim 73 71 73 68; Kim In-kyung (South Korea) 68 70 74 73; Morgan Pressel (U.S.) 70 71 73 71

Els completes Classic comeback

Mon, 03 March, 2008

Ernie Els shot a final-round 67 to win the Honda Classic, his first victory on U.S. soil for nearly four years.

The world number four finished on six under to pip Britain's Luke Donald by a shot and land his first U.S. PGA Tour title since the 2004 Memorial tournament.
Els, accompanied around the course by his sports psychologist, stormed into the lead with four birdies in the opening nine holes and he remained bogey free until the 17th.
"I am so excited, it has been a long time coming. It is a great feeling, I feel really relieved," he said.
"It has been a tough ride for everyone but ultimately you have to believe you can do it."
A gusty breeze on a tough course made for a tight contest where a few errors were always going to make the difference.
Els said the wind may have been an important factor.
"When you are chasing you need tough conditions. So I was happy the wind blew.I'm not a bad wind player and I felt comfortable with that," he said.
Joint overnight leader Donald, who won the event in 2006, bogeyed four holes but was in with a chance right until the end of the par-five 18th.
From a decent fairway position, Donald drove his third shot far right of the hole on to the verge of the green but his chip fell short to end his hopes of forcing a playoff.
After finishing third at the Northern Trust Open in California last month, Donald said his second place was confirmation of his progress.
"There is a lot to build on, these are very encouraging results. I feel like I'm learning every week and getting better for it," he said.
Mark Calcavecchia had been neck and neck with Els through much of the day but his chance went with a bizarre double bogey on the 15th when a bunker shot from the back of the green rolled off the putting surface and lodged in the rocks.
The experienced American finished tied fourth on three under, level with Australians Robert Allenby and Matt Jones.
"It didn't go my way, it wasn't my time. I hit it in the water three times. I said that I had to keep my ball dry and if I had done that it would have been a very different story," Calcavecchia said.
Australian Nathan Green fired a final-round three-under 67 to finish third, a shot behind Donald.

ATP Tour - Darcis upsets Soderling to win Memphis

Mon, 03 Mar 07:10:00 2008

Belgian Steve Darcis captured his second career tournament by upsetting eighth seed Robin Soderling 6-3 7-6 to win the Memphis Championship.

Unseeded Darcis captured the second-set tiebreak 7-5 to win the match in 75 minutes and secure the winner's paycheck of $163,750.
"It's the second victory for me in two finals," Darcis reflected. "That's unreal. It's just amazing how I feel right now."
His only other title came in Amersfoort, in the Netherlands, last July.
Darcis only needed one break of serve to secure the first set and the Belgian never lost his serve during the match, facing only one break point.
Soderling beat top seed Andy Roddick in the quarter-finals and had not previously lost his serve in the tournament.
"He played really well," Soederling said. "He didn't miss much on his serve, much better than I expected him to do.
"It's a shame that I have played my worst match in finals for two weeks in a row now."
The Swede also lost in the Rotterdam final last week

WTA Tour - Davenport collects 55th career title

Sun, 02 Mar 08:37:00 2008

Former world number one Lindsay Davenport claimed her 55th career title by cruising to a 6-2 6-1 victory over teenager Olga Govortsova of Belarus in Memphis.

"(I am) obviously ecstatic to win any tournament and to win here in the States and to play as well as I did to win, how I was winning very comfortable, gives me a lot of confidence," Davenport said.
The 31-year-old fourth seed needed just 60 minutes to beat the fifth-seeded Govortsova in their first career meeting.
She joined Virginia Wade in a tie for seventh place on the all-time victory list with the triumph.
"I've never been one to look at records or anything, but it all seems surreal," she said.
"I love being up there with the greatest player(s) that ever played. I can't believe I passed Monica (Seles). Monica was my idol for years and years."
Davenport served eight aces in overpowering the 19-year-old, winning 89 per cent of her first-serve points. Govortsova double faulted five times and served just two aces.
The victory was Davenport's second this year and fourth since returning to play last September after the birth of her son.
She had not played in an American tournament since 2006 with her last US title coming at New Haven in 2005.

Federer considers skipping Beijing

Mon, 03 Mar 09:17:00 2008

Roger Federer, who has always previously said that an Olympic gold medal is one of his biggest goals, has cast doubt on whether he would play in the Beijing Olympic Games in August.

Federer was a little disillusioned with his experience at the Athens four years ago where he lost early on to Tomas Berdych and feels that some of the shortcomings of those Games might be repeated in China.
The world No.1 from Switzerland said he felt that there were several difficulties, apart from the breeze, and he would like to consider avoiding a repeat.
"It was quite difficult in Athens," Federer said. "Taking the bus and not being in control of my own schedule, and many people recognising me in the village.
"It was not as enjoyable as Sydney, which I loved. I still have not made up my mind (whether to play in Beijing)," he added, perhaps concerned as to whether there would be traffic and commuting problems for visiting athletes.
Asked about the inconvenience of being so often recognised, Federer elaborated by saying: "Every time I go to eat everyone taps on your shoulder. I don't mind it but I wish it was different one day of the week."
Avoiding recognition is also one of the reasons why he makes Dubai his training base, Federer admitted.
It is an arrangement which may help him deal with the rare situation in which he find himself this week.
The world's best player finds himself playing one of the world's most up-and-coming players, Andy Murray in the first round of the Dubai Open - a situation which could only happen here in this very unusual tournament.
That is because the record appearance money gives it an entry similar to the top half of a Master Series, or top quarter of a Grand Slam. But it is a third level tournament's 32 draw with only eight seeds.
Murray, the world number 12 from Scotland, is therefore likely to be a tougher first Test than Federer will get anywhere, especially as he has not competed since being beaten by Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals of the Australian Open more than six weeks ago.

This was as close as Federer got to admitting that his performances in Melbourne might have been affected by having been ill, as had been rumoured, though when asked about this directly he deflected it.

Niida retains WBA minimumweight title

Mar 1, 9:02 pm EST

TOKYO (TICKER) —Jose Luis Varela was no match for Yutaka Niida.
Niida retained his WBA minimumweight title Saturday with a sixth-round knockout of Varela at Korakuen Hall.
Making his seventh defense of the belt after regaining it from Noel Arambulet in July 2004, Niida (23-1-3, 9 KOs) floored the challenger in the third round before sending Varela down for the count at 2:16 of the sixth with several devastating body shots.
“Really hurt me,” Varela said of Niida’s punches. “I couldn’t endure it when Niida battered my body.”
“I know my real power has increased through six defenses, and I wished to show it to the crowd,” Niida said.
The 29-year-old native of Yokohama originally had won the WBA crown in August 2001 but vacated it less than two months later in order to retire. He returned to the ring against Arambulet in July 2003 but failed in his bid to regain the belt.
Following a victory over Phalangchai Sor Voraphin five months afterward, Niida scored a unanimous decision over Arambulet on July 3, 2004 and has been unstoppable ever since.
For Varela (15-4), it was his third loss in six fights. The 29-year-old Venezuelan also had a no-contest against Oscar Martinez due to an accidental head butt during that span.

McGrady, Battier lead Rockets to 15th straight win, 103-89 over Nuggets

Monday, March 03, 2008

HOUSTON (AP)—After their 15th straight victory, the Houston Rockets finally moved up in the Western conference standings.
Tracy McGrady scored 22 points, Shane Battier added 20 and the Rockets tied a franchise record with a 103-89 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Sunday night.

The winning streak is the longest in the NBA this season and matches the longest one in franchise history, reached twice, with the last coming in their championship season of 1993-94. It was Houston’s third straight win since losing All-Star center Yao Ming for the season with a stress fracture in his foot and its 19th win in the last 20 games.

Houston trailed by seven in the first quarter, before taking the lead with about a minute left in the quarter on a dunk by McGrady after a turnover by Allen Iverson. The Rockets didn’t trail after that and led by double digits for most of the game.
Iverson went 7-for-22 and finished with a 17 points after scoring 38 on Friday. He was scoreless in the third quarter and didn’t score again until a jump shot with less than 8 minutes left in the game. In the fourth quarter, he drove the lane and missed a layup before falling face-first onto the court. He got up shaking his head in disbelief.

The Rockets have won their last six games by 10 points or more, extending a franchise record.
Carmelo Anthony led the Nuggets with 19 points and Kenyon Martin had 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The Rockets were up by nine entering the fourth quarter and outscored Denver 18-8 in the first eight minutes of the period, thanks to a pair of 3s by Battier, to stretch their lead to 98-79. Karl replaced his starters with just under 2 minutes remaining.
Dikembe Mutombo started the third straight game in place of Yao and had five rebounds, three blocks and two points in 24 minutes. Carl Landry also filled in at the position and had 12 points and five rebounds.

Houston stretched a 10-point halftime lead to 76-60 with about 3 minutes left in the third quarter. J.R. Smith then hit two straight 3-pointers to get Denver back within 10 about a minute later. The Nuggets trailed 80-71 entering the fourth quarter.
Houston scored the last six points of the second quarter to lead 50-40 at halftime.

The Rockets, who hadn’t trailed in two straight games, got behind 4-0 in this one and Denver led 12-5 midway through the first quarter. Houston scored seven straight points to tie it, before the Nuggets took a 16-12 lead on two quick baskets.
A 9-2 run, fueled by six points by McGrady, gave Houston a 21-18 at the end of the first quarter.

Houston got 18 points from Luis Scola and 16 points and eight assists from Rafer Alston.
