Nishikori advances at Japan Open

Local teenage sensation Kei Nishikori beat American Robert Kendrick 7-6, 6-7, 6-2 to reach the second round of the $969,000 Japan Open on Tuesday.

The 18-year-old, who in February became the first Japanese player to win an ATP Tour title in 16 years, sparked wild cheers when he sealed victory with a thumping serve after just over two hours.

World number five David Ferrer of Spain, American number eight Andy Roddick and Chile's 11th-ranked Fernando Gonzalez head the $794,000 men's draw on the shore of Tokyo Bay.

Former US Open champion Roddick won the China Open at the weekend while France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the runner-up at this year's Australian Open, won his maiden tour title in Bangkok.

The top players were given an extra day's rest as organisers tried to clear a backlog of matches after heavy rain washed out most of Monday's play.

A year-long win drought to take the Singapore Grand Prix

Spain's Fernando Alonso snapped a year-long win drought to take the Singapore Grand Prix on Sunday, winning a drama-filled first ever night race as a comical error cost Felipe Massa dearly.

It was the Renault driver's first victory since the Italian Grand Prix last year and capped a remarkable weekend that saw him top two of the free practice sessions but start 15th on the grid after a mechanical problem in qualifying.

He claimed his 20th career triumph by 2.95 seconds over Germany's Nico Rosberg in a Williams and Britain's world championship leader Lewis Hamilton in third.

Toyota driver Timo Glock was fourth with Toro Rosso's Sebastian Vettel following up his win in Italy this month with fifth. BMW Sauber's Nick Heidfeld took sixth.

Jankovic set on ending 2008 as number one

Serbia's Jelena Jankovic, fresh off her win at the China Open, says that she is determined to finish the year as the WTA's top player and is eyeing Grand Slam glory next season.

The world number two, now just 21 points behind Serena Williams at the top of the rankings, beat Svetlana Kuznetsova in straight sets on Sunday, avenging her defeat the previous week in Tokyo at the hands of the Russian.

Jankovic also made up for defeat in the China Open final last year where she led by a set and 5-1, and had match point, over underdog Agnes Szavay.

But the Serbian, who briefly reached number one in August, insisted that topping the rankings was of secondary importance.

The next stop on Jankovic's schedule is Stuttgart this week, where Williams is also in the draw.

Djokovic jumps into Thai Open quarter-finals

Top seed Novak Djokovic breezed into the quarter-finals of the $576,000 Thailand Open after a 6-1, 6-3 victory over German qualifier Simon Stadler on Thursday.

Djokovic, the world number three, darted through the first set but the German adapted to his serves and tested him more in the second, although the Serb's victory was never in doubt.

"I was surprised the way I played in the first set," Djokovic said. "The second set was a bit difficult as I couldn't get the first serve percentage high."

One of the sport's most colourful characters, Djokovic delighted the Bangkok crowd with one of his trademark impersonations, mimicking Thai favourite Paradorn Srichaphan by bowing repeatedly to the crowd with his palms pressed together.

Djokovic will next play sixth seed Robin Soderling, who thrashed Russian Teimuraz Gabashvili 6-1, 6-3.

Ronaldo back in full training

Former AC Milan and Real Madrid star Ronaldo, one of Brazil's most decorated footballers, was on Tuesday back in full training seven months on from a knee injury which led him to leave Italy.

Ronaldo is currently without a club but has in recent days been working on his fitness with Brazilian side Flamengo - though last week the 32-year-old three-time World Footballer of the Year - he celebrated his birthday on Monday - said he would would fancy a stint with French side Paris St Germain.

Tuesday saw the "Phenomenon" participate in training with the Flamengo youth team having Friday indulged in some light training sessions.

Ronaldo, who has suffered a chapter of knee problems in his career but returned to lift the World Cup in 2002, seriously injured his left knee playing for Milan against Livorno last season.

Media reports have linked him with English Premiership moneybags Manchester City, where compatriot Robinho is playing, but the club has denied any approach.

In May, Ronaldo, the all-time top World Cup scorer, said he was "incredibly ashamed" over a much-publicised encounter with a trio of transvestites who allegedly tried to bribe him out of $30,000 for keeping mum about the incident.

Sania slips to 92nd

Out of action Sania Mirza on Monday slipped one more rung to be 92nd in the latest WTA singles rankings chart though she maintained the 44th place in the doubles.

Sania, recuperating from a wrist injury, has 380 points in singles while 949 in the doubles.

Meanwhile, Leander Paes (2860) and Mahesh Bhupathi (2680) have also maintained their eighth and 11th places respectively in the ATP doubles ranking.

Spain beat defending champions the USA to reach the Davis Cup final

The world number one Rafael Nadal thrashed Andy Roddick in straight sets on Sunday to give the home side an unbeatable 3-1 lead in their semi-final clash.

The Spaniard, who has already picked up the Wimbledon, French Open and Olympic titles this year, cruised to a 6-4, 6-0, 6-4 victory in a colourful, high-spirited atmosphere in a Madrid bullring.

Spain will now play either Argentina or Russia in the final on November 21-23, with the South Americans the favorites after securing a 2-1 lead after the first two days.

Nadal even outperformed Roddick, who survived five match points, on the service game, considered the American's strong point.

Nadal now leads the 8th-ranked Roddick 4-2 in career meetings, while Spain are 4-5 against the Americans in Davis Cup ties.

Saina crashes out of Japan Super series

After the high of last week's Chinese Taipei Open triumph, ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal hit a low as she crashed out of the Japan Super series Badminton tournament with a straight-game defeat in the first round in Tokyo on Wednesday.

The Beijing Olympics quarterfinalist lost 18-21, 16-21 to seventh seed Hong Kong's Mi Zhou in a 30-minute contest.

Zhou will take on local favourite Megumi Taruno, outplayed Canada's Charmaine Reid 21-8, 21-9.

Saina had clinched the prestigious Grand Prix Gold event in Chinese Taipei last week after a fine Olympic debut, in which she beat some higher ranked opponents en route to the quarterfinals.

Gerrard double gives Liverpool tonic in Marseille

Steven Gerrard stole the show on his full return to the Liverpool side on Tuesday with both goals to secure a 2-1 win in his side's opening Champions League Group D encounter at Marseille.

Coach Rafa Benitez's decision to put both Gerrard and Fernando Torres back in the starting line-up after injury - the former played only a cameo role in Saturday's win over arch-rivals Manchester United -was a sure sign Liverpool meant business as they recovered from an early deficit.

Gerrard - who took his tally to 99 for the club - said that it had been a pleasing performance - at least in the first-half.

In a final flurry Ziani fired just over before Gerrard got the whistling treatment as he gave way to Yossi Benayoun.

Babel saw Mandanda block a point blank range shot and then hit the post as Liverpool finished strongly.

Chelsea outclass Bordeaux in opener

Chelsea, last season's beaten Champions League finalists, began their new campaign with a convincing 4-0 victory over Girondins Bordeaux in their Group A match at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.

Headers by Frank Lampard and Joe Cole, in his 50th European match for the club, put Chelsea in control after 30 minutes and only wayward shooting from Lampard and Nicolas Anelka before the break, prevented the London side winning by a bigger margin.

The goals in the final 10 minutes from Florent Malouda and Anelka gave the scoreline a far more realistic look as Chelsea dominated the game from the first kick to the last.

France striker Anelka slotted in his first Champions League goal for Chelsea from point blank range with the last kick of the match after a 30-metre shot from substitute Juliano Belletti was palmed on to the bar by Bordeaux goalkeeper Ulrich Rame.

Chelsea were so much in control that little of note happened after the break until Malouda brightened things up in the 82nd minute when he made it 3-0 following fine approach work by Jon Obi Mikel and a Lampard backheel that set up the French winger.

Tottenham slump to home defeat against Villa

Aston Villa kept Tottenham Hotspur bottom of the Premier League on Monday with a deserved 2-1 victory at White Hart Lane.

Villa scored after five minutes through Nigel Reo-Coker and again early in the second half when Ashley Young's shot squirmed under Tottenham's Brazilian goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes.

Darren Bent deflected in a consolation late on for Tottenham who gave a debut to Russian striker Roman Pavlyuchenko, one of several big-money signings in the summer transfer window.

Tottenham applied some late pressure but Villa could have added to their lead on the break with substitute Marlon Harewood denied by a goal line clearance.

Defeat for Tottenham means they have made their worst start to a season for 34 years, having picked up just one point from their first four games. Villa moved up to fourth spot with seven points from four games.

The Brazilian keeper was forced into action to keep his side in the game but the former PSV Eindhoven stopper was badly at fault after 54 minutes when Young's well-struck shot went through his grasp and into the net.

There were few signs of a Tottenham revival although second half substitute Giovanni dos Santos did look lively.

Bent, who wasted one good chance to score, gave Tottenham a glimmer of hope when Jermaine Jenas's shot hit his knee and flew into the net past Villa's American keeper Brad Friedel.

To add to Tottenham's problems Croatian midfielder Luka Modric limped off injured in the first half.

Milan in crisis after second defeat

AC Milan, with superstars Kaka, Ronaldinho and Andriy Shevchenko in their line-up, lost 2-0 at Genoa on Sunday to plunge the former European champions into crisis.

It was Milan's second defeat in the opening two games of the Serie A season following a 2-1 home loss to Bologna and put renewed pressure on coach Carlo Ancelotti, who failed to guide the team into the Champions League this season.

Giuseppe Sculli opened the scoring for Genoa after 30 minutes with Diego Milito adding an injury-time penalty to give the home side their first win against Milan on their own soil since 1983.

Milan are now secomd from bottom, propped up by Cagliari, who are also without a point.

After the match Milan general manager Adriano Galliani issued a warning to Ancelotti.

"He doesn't risk the sack, but he'd better stop losing," said Galliani.

Russia hope it's no Maria, no problem in Spain

Russia, bidding for a fourth Fed Cup trophy, will be relying instead on world number seven, and former US Open champion, Svetlana Kuznetsova as well as Beijing bronze medal winner Vera Zvonereva to lead their challenge.

Sharapova, who made her Russian Fed Cup debut in the quarter-final win over Israel, has been out of action with a shoulder injury since August while Dementieva, the world number four, and Safina, the world's fifth-ranked player, are skipping the final.

Both are playing in Tokyo from Monday and both are nurturing ambitions of capturing the top ranking in the world.

Spain, who beat China in the semi-finals, are appearing in their 11th Fed Cup final, having won the title five times. However, their last win was 10 years ago.

Their top player is world number 29 Anabel Medina Garrigues, who was a silver medalist in the women's doubles at the Olympics with Virginia Ruano Pascual, the only survivor from the 1998 team.

Spain will also have Carla Suarez Navarro, a shock quarter-finalist at the French Open this year, on singles duty.

Sania touches new low in WTA rankings

Sania Mirza's steep slide in tennis rankings continued as she lost 21 places to be placed 91st in the latest Women's Tennis Association (WTA) rankings released on Monday.

Sania, who is suffering from a wrist injury, was at the 70th position last week. The Indian has seen a massive dip in her rankings since undergoing a wrist surgery in April.

She made an early comeback on the circuit with the DFS Classic tournament in Birmingham in June which though was followed by a series of early exits.

Sania retired in tears from the first round of her maiden Olympics after the pain on her wrist recurred. Later, she pulled out of the US Open.

Meanwhile, US open champion Serena Williams reclaimed the top spot in WTA rankings dispatching Serb Ana Ivanovic who has fallen to third. US open finalist Jelena Jankovic of Serbia remains at second position.

Frustration for Brazil, Argentina in qualifiers

Brazil and Argentina endured more frustration in the World Cup qualifiers on Wednesday with draws against bottom sides Bolivia and Peru respectively.

Brazil were jeered by their own fans in a goalless stalemate at home to bottom-of-the-table Bolivia, who played the last 35 minutes with 10 men.

Argentina drew their fourth successive qualifier when Peru scored with the last kick of the game in Lima to snatch a 1-1 draw.

The two-arch rivals stayed level on 13 points from eight games where they were joined by Chile, who returned from Sunday's 3-0 home defeat by Brazil to thrash Colombia 4-0 in Santiago.

Paraguay, 2-0 winners over Venezuela on Tuesday, lead the 10-team group with 17 points. The top four teams qualify directly for South Africa and the fifth plays off against a team from the CONCACAF region.

Brazil's dismal performance in Rio de Janeiro put the heat back on coach Dunga, who had enjoyed some respite with the win in Chile.

Serena beats Jankovic to become new world No. 1

American Serena Williams defeated second seed Jelena Jankovic 6-4, 7-5 in the women's US Open final on Sunday for her ninth career Grand Slam title and the world number one ranking.

There was plenty at stake as fourth-seeded Williams received the WTA top ranking, a spot she previously held for 57 weeks beginning in 2002.

On Sunday, she kept the Serbian off guard by imposing her powerful serve and strong ground strokes on Jankovic, who was competing in her first Grand Slam final.

The 21-year-old Jankovic came out with more spark in the opening set, taking an early break to go up 2-1.

But Williams broke back in the fourth, sixth and 10th games to take the set.

Williams clinched the match on her second match point, blasting a backhand winner into the open side of the court.

She celebrated by throwing her racket into the air and then jumping up and down before going to the net to shake Jankovic's hand.

Jankovic blew her chance to force a third set as she was up 5-3, 40-0 but then made three straight unforced errors to let Williams off the hook.

Both players didn't want to give an inch, even driving the ball directly at each other on a couple of net points.

This is the ninth time in history that a Grand Slam final has featured two women battling for number one in the world.

Andy Murray advanced to his first Grand Slam final

Britain's Andy Murray advanced to his first Grand Slam final by stunning world number one Rafael Nadal on Sunday in a US Open semi-final, booking a date with reigning champion Roger Federer on Monday.

The 21-year-old Scotsman defeated the reigning Wimbledon, French Open and Olympic champion 6-2, 7-6 (7/5), 4-6, 6-4 in a match that began on Saturday but was concluded the next dat after being halted by rain in the third set.

Murray became only the third British man to reach a Slam final in the 40-year Open era, after Greg Rusedski in the 1997 US Open and John Lloyd at the 1977 Australian Open, and would be the first to win a title by beating Federer.

Sixth seed Murray will rise to fourth in the next rankings, matching Tim Henman and Rusedski for the top ranking ever achieved by a British man.

Jankovic reaches first career Grand Slam final

World No. 2 Jelena Jankovic advanced to her first career Grand Slam final by defeating Russian fifth seed, and Olympic champion, Elena Dementieva 6-4, 6-4 at the US Open on Friday.

Jankovic, who had to rally in both sets of the semi-final on a windy afternoon at the main Arthur Ashe Stadium, was playing in her 20th career Grand Slam tournament.

The final is scheduled for Saturday night but weather forecasters are predicting rain all day as the remnants of tropical storm Hanna move through the New York area.

Jankovic finished off her semi-final by breaking Dementieva for the fifth time in the set, winning it on the second match point when the Russian hit the final ball long.

Once again Beijing gold medal winner Dementieva seemed tormented by her serve. She posted her sixth double fault in the final game and won just one point in the game when the chair umpire refused to let Jankovic challenge a ball the Serbian thought was long.

Jankovic, a semi-finalist at the French Open in June, has won just one title in 2008. That came at the Italian Open where she defeated Venus Williams and Maria Sharapova en route to the final.

She said this is the first Grand Slam she has played without injuries. Jankovic will face either Serena Williams or Dinara Safina in Saturday's final.

Rafael Nadal advanced to his first US Open semi-final

World number one Rafael Nadal advanced to his first US Open semi-final with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 victory over American Mardy Fish early Thursday morning at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Jankovic speeds into US Open semi-finals

Second seed Jelena Jankovic cruised into the semi-finals of the US Open with a 6-1, 6-4 win over 29th seed Sybille Bammer on Tuesday.

Playing in her first quarter-finals at a grand slam, the Austrian Bammer struggled to make headway against a rock-solid Jankovic who controlled the match from the start.

After battling through in earlier rounds, Jankovic was a model of consistency, registering only 14 unforced errors, and never looked in serious danger against Bammer.

Bammer, by contrast, scattered 40 errors against the 23-year-old Serb, who is one of four players who can overtake her compatriot Ana Ivanovic as world number one at the end of the tournament.

Jankovic, who reached the number one ranking for one week last month, has yet to reach a grand slam final, having lost in the semi-finals four times, including Flushing Meadows in 2006.

Jankovic will meet Olympic champion Elena Dementieva of Russia. The fifth seed beat Swiss 15th seed Patty Schnyder 6-2 6-3 in her quarter-final.

Djokovic survives fright even with the poor health

Serbian Novak Djokovic overcame an injury to his hip and a first set loss by rallying to beat Spain's Tommy Robredo 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 in a five-set slugfest at the Us open on Tuesday.

Djokovic, who now leads the career meetings against Robredo with a 3-1 record, appeared to be suffering from a number of ailments during the match, including a bad hip, breathing problems and a twisted ankle.

But he battled through and after the last ball was struck, Djokovic raised both arms into the air then pointed to his heart, knee and head as the crowd of 10,000 at the Arthur Ashe Stadium stood and cheered.

The 2007 US Open runner-up faced a stiff test from 15th-seeded Robredo in the three-hour, 44-minute, and fourth-round match.

The third-seeded Djokovic advances to the quarter-finals where he will play the winner of a match between Chile's Fernando Gonzalez and Andy Roddick of the United States.

The 21-year-old Djokovic hammered 11 aces and hit 55 winners but he also made 58 unforced errors compared to 42 for Robredo.

Real Madrid hit back at Robinho and Chelsea

Real Madrid reacted angrily to Robinho's renewed calls for them to stop blocking his move to Chelsea, hitting out at the player and the Premier League club.

The Spanish champions' statement came swiftly after the Brazil forward Robinho held a news conference in a Madrid hotel to state his case again, with little over 24 hours remaining before the end of the transfer window.

"The club refers to an earlier statement on this matter, when it said if the player's final decision was to unilaterally rescind his contract, we would have no option but to accept it," Real said on their website.

"Real deplore the way Chelsea's directors have acted despite knowing perfectly well the decision not to sell the player, making statements and even going so far as to sell shirts with the player's name on through their official website."

Earlier, Robinho spoke at a chaotic news conference, saying: "The situation has not changed. I want to leave Real and play for Chelsea. I am only thinking of Chelsea.

"Since May I have been trying to renew my contract but they didn't want to know because they were so sure of signing Cristiano Ronaldo. Now they haven't signed anyone they don't want me to go."
